  religion, war, & politics

someone once told me that there are three things you are not supposed to bring up in a politically correct situation. what the heck is a politically correct situation? work? first meeting someone? ?? i don't know... anyway i know there's so much to talk about for all of those and i can already tell this may be a long post, but i was interested in the different major religions of the world and felt like taking a look at some of them:

first; religion, defn (mine): religion like any other instituition is run by people and people are not perfect, thus the inner workings are fallable. i think religion seeks to find a fulfilment, a meaning to life, and a hope for after life.and why in the heck do people seek to find a religion?: are they bored? do they want to feel good about themself somehow? are they guilted into it? tradition? community? good place to bring up kids?

all the points i made above in some way lead you in a direction towards morals. and how can we say justifiably that a certain thing is right or wrong? when you talk about religion you can't but mention an afterlife. and one of peoples hopes is that they will have a good one, if there is one. but how do we get a good afterlife? do we have to have good morals? do we have to do so many things good in the present life to get a good afterlife? and who would decide? those are major fundamental questions of almost any religion.

here are some of the major religions of the world and a few quick notes:

- Islam, defn: submission to the will of Allah
creed: there is one God and Muhammad is his prophet
prayer: 5 times daily
giving: 1/40 to needy
fasting: during holy month
pilgrimage
Koran is word of Allah through Muhammad some of the bible and prophets in it are good, but much of it is believed to have been corrupted by christians

- Judaism
one God reviled to Moses
Messiah is yet to come

- Buddhism
suffering is a major fundamental point
do not kill, commit adultery, lie, drink or take drugs...
teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, aka, Budda ~ 560 BC

- Animism belief in spirital beings (greek mythology, native religions, etc)

- Hinduism, there are many different sects all having different beliefs
reincarnation
salvation by: works/rituals, knowledge of reality and self, devotion

- Christian
One God/Jesus/Holy Spirt
sin seperates man from God
salvation through Jesus
man can have a personal relationship with God

- other terms:
poly - many
mono - one
panth - god and universe are one
agnostic - unsure about god
atheist - no belief in god

- other religions:
confucianism
taoism
pagan
jahovah witnesses
mormon
christian science
new age
bahi

- other terms/thoughts:
relativism/absolutism
fate/plan/chance/randomness

  whistle while i work
it has been sounding like (for a while mind you) that i will be heading out to do construction inspection sometime fairly soon. They've asked me a few times now, (i said i was ready and then they would say they'd send me a little while later) and probalby as soon as i can clear my workload up here i'll be off until the beginning of february. we will be kicking it into high gear for the projects that's for sure, so i will most likely be working quite a bit. I'm trying to get everything in place before I'm off. should be a good change of pace and some good work as well. I'll still have my cell phone, but probably won't be as active on the email, etc.

we have quite a few projects going on but i will most likely be working in the tehachapi mountians on our installation of a new reservoir. it's basically in the middle of no where (check the map) so work and not as much play is probably in the immediate forcast. If you're going to be in that area at all give me a ring and we'll see if we can't meet up. =)

Davis vs Stanford football game @ stanford
vs.
UC Davis played Stanford football for the first time since 1932 (the score then 59-0 stanford, i think). We got a group of 10 tickets and headed down to the game on Saturday afternoon. Parked the truck on the IM fields there and sat back and ate and enjoyed the day. of course we had the frisbee and football out, but i think the chairs and pickup bed were the luxury of choice. we made it into the game and found our seats. food of choice: hot dogs, churros, and kettle corn...why not?

Links: stats, pics, articles

Score with 12 seconds left on the clock, notice the total yards, etc. -- then me in front of the final score of the game!!

view of the davis crowd and some of the field right at the end of the game -- the group that made it down for the game, minus a few who had to leave early.

kev and nance =) -- tailgating before the game, nance made some killer food!

  lunchtime vb

a view of receiving!

here's me attempting to play some volleyball with a hurt shoulder, one armed blocks don't work as well, but when you do get one, all the better to talk trash about...

a little joust. =)

this, btw looks like a little bad form, got a bit underneath the ball and didn't get a good jump, so I'm hitting behind the ball and possibly below the net. wait for it then go to hit it. it was probably a bad set, right? right...

here's me connecting with the ball, don't know if it went in though...

The Relay - coming up on Oct 15-16
So I 'm registered to run in the relay with a team set up by law enforcement guys from Fairfield (our team name is Catie And Annies Cops 3, registered teams page). The run is a 199 mile relay from Napa Valley to Santa Cruz. There are 12 people on a team that run 3 separate legs each. Somehow i got a pretty tough leg (I have legs 10, 22, & 34 link).

my first leg, 8.9mi, 6.94% avg grade!

my 2nd leg, 4.2mi, only a 101' elev gain.

3rd leg, 6.2mi, 352' elev change, but what makes it hard is the last 2mi go from 285' elev to 746' elev, which is an avg 4.37% grade to finish off my total 19.3mi.

The purpose of the relay is to raise money for various groups, usu organ donation. Our team is specific to Catie and Annie (see image and description below). If anyone could dontate or sponsor me please let me know. Also if anyone would want to volunteer I think you can do that here. I know kevin volunteered last year and had a good time doing that. Especially since the event went right by his house in Sonoma (which ironically is where I will be running by this year). Ian convinced kev and i to join this particular team because he has been doing it now for a couple of years. =) should be a good run, be sure to ask me if i've been running to prepare, i've been on the bike a lot but need to put in some foot time as well...

currently living in sac, ca. working for water resources. went to ucd in civil, grew up in turlock, ca. there is a lot to say about me, i am constantly redefining myself everyday. i think the things i do define who i am on a certain level. although the more i communicate and interact with others the more i find out about myself. i can be completely happy without interaction with people though. when i run, when i bike, i am completely in my own thoughts, sometimes i just pay attention to my surroundings, other times, my mind is going a million miles a minute. sometimes i have such a big picture perspective, other times i will really focus on something specific. i'll keep living, learning, experiencing...
