  Good but not Safe
Don't know why but while I was running today this quote popped into my head from one of C.S. Lewis' books - The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe.

"Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you."

I love that line...

  Security?
Yet another reminder of how fragile life is and how anything can occur in the blink of an eye. This last week was pretty full of activities and so many things. Let me go just to the weekend. Friday I went to Bernie and Jamie's wedding reception. It's always good to see everyone and participate in all the activities. Unfortunately for me, as the evening went on, I heard some boys playing basketball outside. So Shelton and I went over and starting playing with them. I proceeded to turn my ankle and get a nice fat bruised ankle. This plays in for the following day.

On Saturday Kevin turned the big 3-0 and the plan was to get in both skiing and wakeboarding in the same day (a-la California and in celebration of the 30th). Kev called me in the morning and I decided to opt out of heading up to Tahoe mainly due to the fact that my ankle was about twice as big and it was throbbing like there was no tomorrow (not to mention the fact that I think I had just crawled into bed following the reception). I told kev I'd get the boat ready to go and fueled up ready for the return. So I headed out on the river and hung out in the sun for a while. =) We wakeboarded in the chilly Sacramento River waters and planned to go out to grab a bite to eat just as the sun was going down. Kev and I dropped everyone off at Chevy's on the River and took the boat back to the Marina. We drove over and met everyone for some food. When we finished up we went back to the cars and I heard Shelton say -- 'Someone broke into my car'. The initial reaction is like really?! No way...! So we went over and checked it out. Yep, someone smashed the rear passenger window and threw some objects down the levee. Then a couple seconds later kev says the same thing -- 'Someone broke into mine too'. Yep, as we proceeded to look down the row of cars we could see that there were at least two others where there was glass on the ground -- not cool, what dorks.

From what we could make out this looked like a quick hit and run. There was not a lot of stuff missing, just a couple things. Kev lost the company gas card and from Sheltons car, my backpack was taken, in it camera, ipod, and wetsuit. That sucks!!

I always try to be aware of stuff like that and leaving things in the car, but sometimes this crap happens. Serious bummer, and it just takes a little bit of any sense of security that we may think we have. Anyway thought I'd share some of the story here with you as a reminder...

  Ghengis Khan Quote
Here's an excerpt from one of the books I'm reading. Fairly interesting thoughts on one of the first relgious debates, I found it interesting, thought you might too. Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World (pg 172-173):

The discussion continued for some time, and according to Rubruck's own account, it was obvious that he did not fare well in the sometimes acrimonious arguments. He was unaccustomed to debating with peopple who did not share his basic assumptions of Catholic Christianity. Evidently, Mongke Khan recognized the problems he was having and suggested that all the scholars present take time to write out their thoughts more clearly and then return for a fuller discussion and debate of the issues.

The Mongols loved competions of all sorts, and they organized debates among rival religions the same way they organized wrestling matches. It began on a specific date with a panel of judges to oversee it. In this case Mongke Khan ordered them to debate before threee judges: a Christian, a Muslim, and a Buddihist. A large audience assembled to watch the affair, which began with great seriousness and formality. And offical lay down the strict rules by which Mongke wanted the debate to proceed: on pain of death "no one shall dare to speak words of contention."

Rubruck and the other Christians joined together in one team with the Muslims in an effort to refute the Buddhist doctrines. As these men gathered together in all their robes and regalia in the tents on the dusty planins of Mongolia, they were doing something that no other set of scholars or theologians had ever done in history. It is doubtful that representatives of so many types of Christianity had come to a single meeting, and certainly they had not debated, as equals, with representatives of the various Muslim and Buddhist faiths. The religious scholars had to compete on the basis of their beliefs and ideas, using no weapons or the authority of any ruler or army behind them. They could use only words and logic to test the ability of their ideas to persuade.

In the initial round, Rubruck faced a Buddhist from North China who began by asking how the world was made and what happened to the soul after death. Rubruck countered that the Buddhist monk was asking the wrong questions; the first issue should be about God from whom all things flow. The umpires awarded the first points to Rubruck.

Their debate ranged back and forth over the topics of evil versus good, God's nature, what happens to the souls of animals, the existance of reincarnation, and whether God had created evil. As they debated, the clerics formed shifting coalitions among the various religions according to the topic. Between each round of wrestling, Mongol athletes would drink fermented mare's milk; in keeping with that tradition, after each round of the debate, the learned men paused to drink deeply in preparation for the next match.

No side seemed to convince the other of anything. Finally, as the effects of the alcohol became stronger, the Christians gave up tring to persuade anyone with logical arguments, and resorted to singing. The Muslims, who did not sing, responded by loudly reciting the Koran in an effort to drown out the Christian, and the Buddhists retreated into silent mediation. At the end of the debate, unable to convert ofr kill one another, they concluded the way most Mongol celebrations concluded, with eveeryone simply too drunk to continue.

  Fear & Discovery
What are you afraid of? Fear is a powerful, unpleasant feeling of risk or danger, either real or imagined. I've heard that knowledge of what ever you are afraid of will satiate fear. I think that is true to a certain extent, that is until the logical side and heart don't connect on that issue. There are just some things that just don't match up rationally, and that is something that makes me human. I think some people don't admit that they are afraid of anything. And that just doesn't add up, sounds like they're afraid of being fearful. One of the things that lets me know that I'm alive are my feelings, whether it's joy at accomplishment, sadness in loss, or those butterflies in my stomach every once in a while. I know that once I get past that initial feeling of 'fear' it leads to discovery of a decision or action. So I remind myself to follow the path from fear to discovery, let my emotions give me a push to allow my logical self to make a move. Don't just stand there, do something!!!

  Canelow Rd Ride

Did a quick ride over out of Davis. Was just planning on a short ride, then kev and I hooked up with another guy riding and he was going out to do a loop with some hills. We decided to head out with him and it turned into a little longer outing than I think we were ready for. I had one bottle of water and no food with me. Guess I need to bring more with me when I head out for a ride...
Stats:
Distance: 58.85 mi
Start: 1630
Finish: little after 2000
Riding Time: 3:13
Avg Speed: 18.3 mph
Max Speed: 33.3 mph
Food consumption: 1 bottle of water

I just met my little brother for the first time
Have I lost a little bit of that kid in me? I hope not. I met for the first time today with my little brother that I'm matched with. He asked me some questions I haven't considered in a little while.
-If you could have any super powers what would they be? (you can have more than one)
(his answer: acid spit that he could control when he wanted to, that's pretty cool)
- Do you like to make funny faces or funny sounds?
- Do you like the Care Bears?
- Do you like peanut butter and jelly mixed together?
- Who's your favorite teenage mutant ninja turtle?
- Do you have any wierd things or phrases you say?

  pbh4 2007 NCAA picks

My picks are in. See how they compare to yours if you want. For some reason I've got UCLA winning it all. Who knows who the Cinderella story will be this year. Everyone seems to think Florida. I'd rather see some West Coast teams knock them off. hmmmm

1st Ride into the New Job
So it's a little bit farther ride from my house into work now. To downtown it was 11.2mi, taking me on average about 40 mins of riding time. Today I logged my distance at 20.7mi with a riding time of 73 mins. That's about an 84% increase. Which may mean riding in fewer times during the week. I would probably be happy riding in about every other day. Just have to make sure to pull myself out of bed a little earlier now. The ride is the same up to mile 8 at which point I head down the American River Trail for about 10mi. Which is actually nice because I don't have to worry about cars while I'm on the trail. We'll see how it goes, but that's the latest on the bike ride into work...

I may need to keep at it because not only is the relay coming up on May 5th, but the Davis Double Century is two weeks later on May 19th as well. I did it in 2004 & 2005 and missed it last year. The plan is to do it again this year, we'll see how I hold up.

Also note the drive into work now is about 15.5mi at approx 25 mins. Compaired to the about 10.5mi at approx 17 mins that it was before to get to work from home. I also had some more options to get downtown than I do here. I could take a community shuttle that went by my house 2 times a day (twice in the morning and twice in the evening) and dropped off downtown in front of my old job for $1 each way. Or I could even ride the bus which had some additional times but was a little further from drop off and pickup points. Just some thoughts on getting to and from work right now.

  The Relay - May 5th & 6th 2007!!!
The Relay is coming up again. We will be without kevin in the van this year because of a conflict in schedule, but it still should be an awesome time. Right now I feel like my body should be in decent enough shape to rock it. Although it's always a strain. =) Looking forward to it!!! GET READY FOR THE BLUE OOOXXXXX!!!!!

  March Madness
The sun is out, Chinese New Year is over, and now it's time for college hoops. The men's brackets came out yesterday, http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/ncaatourney07/bracket. When you watch college ball, it's so much more pure than professional sports. In the pros the athletes are so talented but you just can't compete with how the college kids put themselves on the line. Get your picks in!!

  Shamrock'n Half

How did I get dragged into another run? I was in town and not up the hill skiing, so I figured what the heck, what's another run under my belt. The girls training for the Rock'n'Roll Marathon in San Diego on June 3 convinced me to come out and run this last Sunday since they were going to be running in it. I've been running a little bit and I didn't do the Davis Stampede this year, so I was due to particpate in an organized run I suppose. The only other half marathon I've done was during the Wildflower Tri back in Apr of 2005 and that one really tore me up.

I went out and felt pretty good here in Sacramento so I'm glad I pounded some miles out. Peer pressure keeps coming for me to do the Rock'n'Roll, but I still don't think I have a ton of desire to beat on my body to complete it. We'll see if I actually keep running between now and then. It's going to be lighter out now because of the time change and that may spell for me doing other activities rather than running.

Here's some times of me and some of the friends. =):

1346 Kristin Brady .....Sac .2247 .27 126 F 25-29 2:18:49.4 10:36/M

Notes (random or not):
- The winner of this race was 33 yrs old and had a time of 1:11:29 (5:27/M)
- Lance Armstrong did his first full marathon in 2:59:36 on Nov 5, 2006 (link)
- Oprah's record marathon time is 4:29:20 at the Marine Corps Marathon in 1994

I think if I did a marathon I would want to try to do under 3hrs, but that may not be realistic... I was thinking about the goal of 1:30 for this half marathon, but since I hadn't been training specifically for a half, I made sure not to push myself over any limit too early on. I think I could have run a little faster, but am very happy with what I got, just some more things to shoot for... =)

No More VB Dwntwn? No Way!
So I had to do it. I had to check out how long it would take me to get downtown to try to get in some games today.

Previous distance fm office to park: 2 blocks
Time to get there: 2min
Current dis fm office to park: 10mi
Time to get there: 17min

So I made it down and got a few games in. It's doable, but definitely not going to be as frequent any more. Today was good enough weather where I didn't really need to take a shower. But really the only added time for me should be the travel time. I'm saving a little on the setup and takedown of the net. I can't justify spending as much time on that any more, so I figure balancing that out with some of my travel time and playing one less game should be about the same on paper. We'll see how that turns out. My plan is that when the farmers markets start up again in May that I'll shoot down there on Tuesdays, get some fruits and such and throw in a couple games and scoot back to work. Good theory, I think...
