  Le Tour 2007!

I don't know how much you are into Le Tour de France (TDF) but it's really interesting to follow. There are so many things going on it's unbelievable. You've got races going on for:

- The General Category (GC, Yellow Jersey - aka - maillot jaune ) best aggregate time overall (this is the most prestigious), and you can get time bonuses by finishing in the top of a stage.
- The Points Classification (Sprinters, Green Jersey - aka - maillot vert) - points are awarded at predetermined places on various stages with varying values. For example, the race directors could say the first five riders to mile 70 in stage 5 get points, say 5pts for 1st there, 3pts for second there, and so on. But this makes other little races within the race and makes for a lot of variations in strategy.
- The King of the Mountains (KoM, Polka Dot Jersey - aka - maillot à pois rouges)
- Best Young Rider (White Jersey - aka - maillot blanc) rider under 25 (as of Jan 1 of the tour year) in the highest place
- Overall Team (normally, there are 9 riders on a team) the overall team is determined by adding the best 3 riders times on each stage and the team with the lowest combined time wins.
- Most Aggressive Rider (prix de combativité) - Rider that attacks or does the most to animate the day's racing.

One of the websites I check when looking at cycling stuff is Velo News. They usu have some pretty interesting commentary and you can follow a live race coverage web update with some of their staff covering the race. It's pretty exciting to do it that way and they'll help by explaining a lot of what's going on. If I can't watch it (which I usu can't live because most of the races finish at ~8:30a), I try to wait until the race is almost over and then read the commentary and try to time it with the finish of the stage. Then I can get all the action at once and know when the days stage ends, who's come out on top. =) Plus I like reading the rider diaries which usu has one of the riders in the tour giving their impressions on a given day.

And you've got riders going just for stages wins for various reasons on specific days. Maybe they're good at climbing and it's a hilly stage, maybe they're good on the flats and a good sprinter and think they can out position anyone else. Or maybe they finish in their home town, or heck, I'd like to say I won the stage on Champs-Élysées in Paris, or maybe they're feeling good that day, maybe they don't want another team to get a time bonus, maybe their sponsor just wants a stage win or two, lots of things to vie for. Plus what if there is a crash or what if someone you think could win the race looks really weak one day? Make him pay and lose some time. So many different reasons, and so many different riders with different roles. Makes for a lot of options. Plus now with communications and then on TV they'll show some of the riders cadence (rpms) and heart rates (bpm), which is cool too if you check yours at all as well.

And something else I've missed in the last couple of tours is that the US Postal team is not there anymore, well the USPS just doesn't sponsor a team. I always thought that was so cool, having a team sponsored by the US govt, plus they were so dominant...oh well... there are still a ton of other cool teams.

  Riding into work
Ok, so I'm cutting a little off the ride into work by driving in a little. It gives me a straight 10mi on the American River Trail and then about 4 off to get to work from there. Not too bad and a pretty nice and managable distance. This morning there was a little activity on the ride. I went for a little while and then a guy asked if he could just ride behind me and catch the draft. I said ok, but that I wouldn't be that fast. He got pulled along for a while but then when we got to a little curve he totally wiped out! His face and legs and arms were all bloody. I guess that's why a lot of cyclists don't like it when other people ride with them that they don't know because it could be them they cause to wipe out. He was ok, a bit shaken up though...

Here's the ride (link) using a website on the net.

  ddac
The Davis Double Century Ride 2007 (DDC 2007). I was a little nervous, I knew I wasn't really prepared because of the amount of riding I'd been doing. But kev & I did it anyway. We got underway from his house at 5a and we felt ok (we decided that after we did it the first year and our odometers read 199mi instead of 200mi, that we should just start at kev's and get the little extra to push us over the top). We latched on with a group of riders and got pulled into the first rest stop.

before (4:30a, yes, I'm awake & hungry) --- during (@ Famham Ranch, sleeveless shirt & arm warmers, sexy, I know!)

Famham Ranch (RS#1) ~06:15, 26mi
When we got to the rest stop, there were a lot of riders congregated and looking a little confused. We heard that there was a fire up near the next rest stop and that the roads were being closed. So the ride organizers said they would send us in the other direction.

Guinda Fire Station (RS#2) ~07:22, 44mi
We latched onto another big group and got to the next stop pretty quickly. At this point the left side of my back was killing me. I figured out that it was because I had put a new cleat on my left shoe. I adjusted it here and that didn't bother me for the rest of the ride.

kev grabbing a pic while riding --- at the Oasis Rest Stop

Oasis (RS#3) ~09:25, 71mi
Made it here a little slowly but ok.

Lower Lake High School (RS#4) ~10:56, 90mi
I was feeling pretty tired by this point and really starting to know I hadn't been riding enough for this event. We rested a little longer than at the other stops and got underway to do a good climb.

Mt Cobb (my turn around before) ~13:43, 96mi
We started going and I looked over at kev and said if I had any chance of making it back I was going to have to turn around here. Since my odometer was not working, kev told me I was at mile 91, I was good with that. I turned around and started coming back. At this point I did a good job of almost wrecking. While riding along the shoulder, a car was coming up close to me and I got over a little bit more. As I got over I noticed there was a pretty good sized branch in the lane (about 5' long, starting at about a fist sized width, with branches coming out all over it) as I was squeezed right next to both the car and branch (I barely fit) my foot came down and caught in some wire that was wrapped around the brach (I don't know why there was wire on the branch). The branch and wire swung around to my left side and hit my arm and left leg and then got wrapped in my rear tire a bit. Luckily for me I was able to stop and get it out without any significant carnage. =)

Lower Lake High School
I came back and waited for kev to finish the other riding he had to do.

during (@ Lower Lake High School)

Resurrection (RS#7) ~15:46, 115mi
I almost gave up at this point. We got going and found a little group to ride with. I was feeling pretty weak but kept on going. Once we started climbing, I was seriously slow! At one point I got off and waited. I cammed a little more food into me. I was just going to try to get a ride, but finished the climb. I knew the rest was down hill after that.

Guinda Fire Station (RS#8) ~18:14, 142mi
kev and I found another group and cruised into this stop. I was pretty tired but was able to just focus on the wheel in front of me. We took a little longer break here and made our way out again.

during (@ Guinda Fire Station)

Famham Ranch (RS#9) ~19:35, 160mi
We latched back onto the group we found earlier and made it to the ranch. Kev was doing pretty good at this point, somehow he got up in front of the group of about 30 of us and pulled most of the way down hwy 16.

Plainfield Fire Station (RS#10) ~20:33, 175mi
Getting to this stop is always the longest part of the ride it feels like. There's only a couple of handfuls of miles left and you're in the grid of country roads that seem to never end. All you can think about here is that there is chili and grilled cheese sandwiches at the fire station.

Davis High (End) ~21:05, 179mi (then another ~2-3 back to kevs...)
I barely made it back here, but limped in on fumes. Yay!

  Sonoma Ride Again!

So the DDC (Davis Double Century) is coming up this weekend. I haven't been riding at all and my rear end is going to be a tensy bit sore, I'm sure. My momma came up to sac for Mother's Day and we had planned to head over to kev's and trev's parents for lunch. Kev and I wanted to get in the steep climb before their house, so we had trev drop us off about 40mi out. We got in some climbing and it felt pretty good. That is until about mile 36, when I basically hit a wall. My body wasn't quite used to long extended exerted activity and I really ran out of energy. To get up the hill to kev's parents house I just put my head down and made 's's on the road and made the steep 1/2 mile (which actually is tough, but even tougher with no energy).

We did one of the hard climbs from Stage 2 of the 2007 Tour of California, but going the opposite direction. It was still tough... Here's what the profile of Oakville Grade & Trinity Grade looks like for the way we went:

Stats:
Distance: ~38 mi
Start: 0950
Finish: little after 1220
Riding Time: 2:30
Avg Speed: ?? 15.2 mph
Max Speed: ?? mph

Avg HR: 142
Calories: 2221
*note, my computer wasn't working, but I had my HR monitor going...
Food consumption: 1 bottle of water, cliff bar, electrolyte pill
Prefood notes: Banana, bagel

  7 wks & counting!
Only 7 weeks until the Davis Double Century (DDC). I've only got ~440mi ridden on my bike in the last 3 months and I'm thinking about putting in 200 in one day here pretty soon! Just got to start putting some time in on the bike. Hopefully should be easier now with it staying light longer, but does that longer light time mean more wakeboarding too?

  Canelow Rd Ride

Did a quick ride over out of Davis. Was just planning on a short ride, then kev and I hooked up with another guy riding and he was going out to do a loop with some hills. We decided to head out with him and it turned into a little longer outing than I think we were ready for. I had one bottle of water and no food with me. Guess I need to bring more with me when I head out for a ride...
Stats:
Distance: 58.85 mi
Start: 1630
Finish: little after 2000
Riding Time: 3:13
Avg Speed: 18.3 mph
Max Speed: 33.3 mph
Food consumption: 1 bottle of water
Prefood notes: Banana, cliff bar

1st Ride into the New Job
So it's a little bit farther ride from my house into work now. To downtown it was 11.2mi, taking me on average about 40 mins of riding time. Today I logged my distance at 20.7mi with a riding time of 73 mins. That's about an 84% increase. Which may mean riding in fewer times during the week. I would probably be happy riding in about every other day. Just have to make sure to pull myself out of bed a little earlier now. The ride is the same up to mile 8 at which point I head down the American River Trail for about 10mi. Which is actually nice because I don't have to worry about cars while I'm on the trail. We'll see how it goes, but that's the latest on the bike ride into work...

I may need to keep at it because not only is the relay coming up on May 5th, but the Davis Double Century is two weeks later on May 19th as well. I did it in 2004 & 2005 and missed it last year. The plan is to do it again this year, we'll see how I hold up.

Also note the drive into work now is about 15.5mi at approx 25 mins. Compaired to the about 10.5mi at approx 17 mins that it was before to get to work from home. I also had some more options to get downtown than I do here. I could take a community shuttle that went by my house 2 times a day (twice in the morning and twice in the evening) and dropped off downtown in front of my old job for $1 each way. Or I could even ride the bus which had some additional times but was a little further from drop off and pickup points. Just some thoughts on getting to and from work right now.

  Apple Hill Ride

Kev and I went for another ride this weekend. There just has been no snow, and it's hard to justify heading up the hill to grind on our skis. We'll keep praying for some snow to fall though. But since we haven't been getting up to ski, we have been getting in some rides instead. Unheard of to be riding up in Placerville area at this time of year, but we did it. On Sunday the winds down in Sac area were around 20 mph, so we decided to head up and get in another loop in the Apple Hill region. I'm really glad we did because it was georgous up there! A great short ride we put in.
Stats:
Distance: 26.61 mi
Start: 1323
Finish: 1512
Riding Time: 1:45
Avg Speed: 15.1 mph
Max Speed: 39.9 mph
Wind: W 7
Temp: 55°
Food consumption: 1 granola bar, 1 bottle of water
Prefood notes: cheerios, banana, muffin
Riding Notes: We had done a similar ride back on Oct 22, but had taken a slightly different route. I liked the route we did this time a bit better. This was the basic description of the route:
- start Mosiquito Rd, veer onto Union Ridge Rd, Left on Hassler Rd, left on Hidden Valley / N Canyon Rd (we had taken a right here before...), left on Larsen Dr, Rt on Cable, rt on Carson Rd, lft on Snows Rd, which turns into Newtown Rd, rt on Pleasant Valley Rd, Rt on Cedar Ravine Rd, rt on Main St, lft back onto Mosquito Rd.
We could have added a little bit more by turning on Quarry Rd off of Cedar Ravine, but just kept heading on Cedar Ravine.

3 Bears Loop in the Bay Area

Kev, Matty, and I went for a ride over in the bay area today. Kev and I met Matty over at his place in Berkeley and started and finished the ride from there. I'm still feeling a bit under the weather from being sick, but made it through the ride ok. I loved Kev's comment that we were chasing the sun as we were finishing up the ride. On our decent back down into Berkeley we could see a really nice siloette off the hills and Golden Gate Bride across the bay. I can see how you could fall in love with the Bay area. There are a ton of people. But there's also a ton of stuff to do, a ton of character, tons of good food, and great scenery.
Stats:
Distance: 42.60 mi
Start: 1440
Finish: little after 1800
Riding Time: 3:03
Avg Speed: 14.2 mph
Max Speed: 38.1 mph
Food consumption: 1 cliff bar, 1 bottle of water
Prefood notes: Banana, Jamba, bagel
Riding Notes: We did the 3 bears loop, the direction we went you hit the mama bear, then papa, then baby bear hills. The climb at Wildcat is harder and longer, but not bad. I'm glad I learned a little bit about winter riding from the last ride we did at
Mt Diablo, because I almost started the ride again without my jacket. And this has been a few of the coldest days of the year so far. And as soon as we got on the other side of the ridge, away from the bay, the temp dropped probably a quick 10 deg. It was very cold as we were finishing. I had booties on and I know my feet were cold! A good and fun ride though. Also, this ride touched close to the ride we did from Lafayette on Apr 1, 2006.
