Castro Valley RideKev, T$, and I got in a quick ride before Ian & Nancy's 30th bday parties. I liked the route, fun, some good climbs decent roads. Plus I actually felt ok, at least not completely weak. Here's the route (link).
Stats: Dist: ~40mi Speed: 14 mph (still rough because I haven't gotten a new computer yet) Chrono: 2:53:26 HR: 126 avg, 177 max, 65 min Cal: 2086 Food Notes: Banana & cliff bar before, cliff bar during, two water bottles of water drunk
Sonoma Ride Again! So the DDC (Davis Double Century) is coming up this weekend. I haven't been riding at all and my rear end is going to be a tensy bit sore, I'm sure. My momma came up to sac for Mother's Day and we had planned to head over to kev's and trev's parents for lunch. Kev and I wanted to get in the steep climb before their house, so we had trev drop us off about 40mi out. We got in some climbing and it felt pretty good. That is until about mile 36, when I basically hit a wall. My body wasn't quite used to long extended exerted activity and I really ran out of energy. To get up the hill to kev's parents house I just put my head down and made 's's on the road and made the steep 1/2 mile (which actually is tough, but even tougher with no energy).
We did one of the hard climbs from Stage 2 of the 2007 Tour of California, but going the opposite direction. It was still tough... Here's what the profile of Oakville Grade & Trinity Grade looks like for the way we went:
Stats: Distance: ~38 mi Start: 0950 Finish: little after 1220 Riding Time: 2:30 Avg Speed: ?? 15.2 mph Max Speed: ?? mph Avg HR: 142 Calories: 2221 *note, my computer wasn't working, but I had my HR monitor going... Food consumption: 1 bottle of water, cliff bar, electrolyte pill Prefood notes: Banana, bagel
Kev, Matty, and I went for a ride over in the bay area today. Kev and I met Matty over at his place in Berkeley and started and finished the ride from there. I'm still feeling a bit under the weather from being sick, but made it through the ride ok. I loved Kev's comment that we were chasing the sun as we were finishing up the ride. On our decent back down into Berkeley we could see a really nice siloette off the hills and Golden Gate Bride across the bay. I can see how you could fall in love with the Bay area. There are a ton of people. But there's also a ton of stuff to do, a ton of character, tons of good food, and great scenery. Stats: Distance: 42.60 mi Start: 1440 Finish: little after 1800 Riding Time: 3:03 Avg Speed: 14.2 mph Max Speed: 38.1 mph Food consumption: 1 cliff bar, 1 bottle of water Prefood notes: Banana, Jamba, bagel Riding Notes: We did the 3 bears loop, the direction we went you hit the mama bear, then papa, then baby bear hills. The climb at Wildcat is harder and longer, but not bad. I'm glad I learned a little bit about winter riding from the last ride we did at Mt Diablo, because I almost started the ride again without my jacket. And this has been a few of the coldest days of the year so far. And as soon as we got on the other side of the ridge, away from the bay, the temp dropped probably a quick 10 deg. It was very cold as we were finishing. I had booties on and I know my feet were cold! A good and fun ride though. Also, this ride touched close to the ride we did from Lafayette on Apr 1, 2006.
Mt Diablo Ride 4 of us got in a good day of climbing in the bay area. We started in Danville and made our way to the top of Mt Diablo. We went up North Gate Rd, then to the summit and decended via South Gate Rd. Many of the links I've seen recommend coming up South Gate Rd and then decending North Gate... Guess we're a little backwards, but what's new?! I think most of the ride is about 6% for about 11mi I want to say, then the last little bit (I've heard ~ 200m, but it feels like a lot more!) is about 13%!!! That's a pretty steep assent! Stats that I kind of remember:
Start: ~1100 Summit: 1308 Finish: ~1530? Distance: ~40mi for me...
Notes: was a good steady climb, not much relent, but would be really good for climbing training. Also, note to myself, when riding in the winter, wear winter clothes, you can always tie a jacket around your waist if you get too hot, but you can't put on more clothes you don't have. I got to the summit, ~51°, and then gusts of wind ~40mph and I was cold. Then I decended in the shade, that wasn't warm either. =Þ Food notes: I ate a bowl of cherios and a banana in the morning. Then a cliff bar on the drive over. When I got there I was still kind of hungry so I grabbed a bagel with egg and veggies right before the ride. As I rode I just couldn't quite get going. Then about an hour in that thing must have digested, because I felt like I had more energy and drive... The moral of the story is food management is key... Also only had one small bottle of water during the ride and a granola bar, probably need to work on that as well!
currently living in sac, ca. working for water resources. went to ucd in civil, grew up in turlock, ca. there is a lot to say about me, i am constantly redefining myself everyday. i think the things i do define who i am on a certain level. although the more i communicate and interact with others the more i find out about myself. i can be completely happy without interaction with people though. when i run, when i bike, i am completely in my own thoughts, sometimes i just pay attention to my surroundings, other times, my mind is going a million miles a minute. sometimes i have such a big picture perspective, other times i will really focus on something specific. i'll keep living, learning, experiencing...
