  Road Trip?!
About time for a little trek me thinks... Heading out May 25th coming back June 3rd or 4th. What's on the agenda? Spending some times with the boys and cheering on the girls do their marathon on June 3rd. Other than that I'm hoping to see some friends and spend a little time on the beach. Sounds like a good plan to me.
BTW - HDE, if you're reading this, I can't get an email through to you for some reason... hoping to check out your project as well! May 29th - June 1st week work for you?

The Davis Double Century Ride 2007 (DDC 2007). I was a little nervous, I knew I wasn't really prepared because of the amount of riding I'd been doing. But kev & I did it anyway. We got underway from his house at 5a and we felt ok (we decided that after we did it the first year and our odometers read 199mi instead of 200mi, that we should just start at kev's and get the little extra to push us over the top). We latched on with a group of riders and got pulled into the first rest stop.

before (4:30a, yes, I'm awake & hungry) --- during (@ Famham Ranch, sleeveless shirt & arm warmers, sexy, I know!)

Famham Ranch (RS#1) ~06:15, 26mi
When we got to the rest stop, there were a lot of riders congregated and looking a little confused. We heard that there was a fire up near the next rest stop and that the roads were being closed. So the ride organizers said they would send us in the other direction.

Guinda Fire Station (RS#2) ~07:22, 44mi
We latched onto another big group and got to the next stop pretty quickly. At this point the left side of my back was killing me. I figured out that it was because I had put a new cleat on my left shoe. I adjusted it here and that didn't bother me for the rest of the ride.

kev grabbing a pic while riding --- at the Oasis Rest Stop

Oasis (RS#3) ~09:25, 71mi
Made it here a little slowly but ok.

Lower Lake High School (RS#4) ~10:56, 90mi
I was feeling pretty tired by this point and really starting to know I hadn't been riding enough for this event. We rested a little longer than at the other stops and got underway to do a good climb.

Mt Cobb (my turn around before) ~13:43, 96mi
We started going and I looked over at kev and said if I had any chance of making it back I was going to have to turn around here. Since my odometer was not working, kev told me I was at mile 91, I was good with that. I turned around and started coming back. At this point I did a good job of almost wrecking. While riding along the shoulder, a car was coming up close to me and I got over a little bit more. As I got over I noticed there was a pretty good sized branch in the lane (about 5' long, starting at about a fist sized width, with branches coming out all over it) as I was squeezed right next to both the car and branch (I barely fit) my foot came down and caught in some wire that was wrapped around the brach (I don't know why there was wire on the branch). The branch and wire swung around to my left side and hit my arm and left leg and then got wrapped in my rear tire a bit. Luckily for me I was able to stop and get it out without any significant carnage. =)

Lower Lake High School
I came back and waited for kev to finish the other riding he had to do.

during (@ Lower Lake High School)

Resurrection (RS#7) ~15:46, 115mi
I almost gave up at this point. We got going and found a little group to ride with. I was feeling pretty weak but kept on going. Once we started climbing, I was seriously slow! At one point I got off and waited. I cammed a little more food into me. I was just going to try to get a ride, but finished the climb. I knew the rest was down hill after that.

Guinda Fire Station (RS#8) ~18:14, 142mi
kev and I found another group and cruised into this stop. I was pretty tired but was able to just focus on the wheel in front of me. We took a little longer break here and made our way out again.

during (@ Guinda Fire Station)

Famham Ranch (RS#9) ~19:35, 160mi
We latched back onto the group we found earlier and made it to the ranch. Kev was doing pretty good at this point, somehow he got up in front of the group of about 30 of us and pulled most of the way down hwy 16.

Plainfield Fire Station (RS#10) ~20:33, 175mi
Getting to this stop is always the longest part of the ride it feels like. There's only a couple of handfuls of miles left and you're in the grid of country roads that seem to never end. All you can think about here is that there is chili and grilled cheese sandwiches at the fire station.

Davis High (End) ~21:05, 179mi (then another ~2-3 back to kevs...)
I barely made it back here, but limped in on fumes. Yay!

  Recipes...
Where do you get your good recipes? Is it just from practice or do you have a few secret ones stored away from relatives, etc? One of my cooking consultants sent me a link for past Cook's Illustrated (CI) recipes on the web, http://longboredsurfer.com/recipes.php, it's got some good stuff in there. CI is basically the engineers guide, I say. They tell you why they put in certain ingredients and what will make the recipe easier and that they went through 5 gajillion iterations to get there. Gotta love it! One of my personal favs on that site is the pad thai, try it out, it's actually not that bad if you prep everything a day before. And add tofu....

  Sonoma Ride Again!

So the DDC (Davis Double Century) is coming up this weekend. I haven't been riding at all and my rear end is going to be a tensy bit sore, I'm sure. My momma came up to sac for Mother's Day and we had planned to head over to kev's and trev's parents for lunch. Kev and I wanted to get in the steep climb before their house, so we had trev drop us off about 40mi out. We got in some climbing and it felt pretty good. That is until about mile 36, when I basically hit a wall. My body wasn't quite used to long extended exerted activity and I really ran out of energy. To get up the hill to kev's parents house I just put my head down and made 's's on the road and made the steep 1/2 mile (which actually is tough, but even tougher with no energy).

We did one of the hard climbs from Stage 2 of the 2007 Tour of California, but going the opposite direction. It was still tough... Here's what the profile of Oakville Grade & Trinity Grade looks like for the way we went:

Stats:
Distance: ~38 mi
Start: 0950
Finish: little after 1220
Riding Time: 2:30
Avg Speed: ?? 15.2 mph
Max Speed: ?? mph

Avg HR: 142
Calories: 2221
*note, my computer wasn't working, but I had my HR monitor going...
Food consumption: 1 bottle of water, cliff bar, electrolyte pill
Prefood notes: Banana, bagel

The Relay - 3rd Time Down!

Catie & Annie's Cops the original team. In the front (from right to left) is Joe (their dad), then Catie & Annie

A really good run and great time as usual. Running in Van #1 was a bit different than running in Van #2, but very fun as well. I asked for some easier legs because my hammie was still hurting and ran a shorter distance than I've run in years past. More commentary to come I'm sure.

The whole team --- Van#1 (Sean, Grenham, Arron, Ian, Whitney, me) --- Van#2 (Mary Beth, Lexi*, Kris, Karin*, Kathy, John*)
The team after!!!

Some decorating of the van --- Me

Oh yes, it's going to be a long weekend --- Some sweet views during the first set of legs

Some pics from riding in the van, good times

Leg 05 ~3:30p - 5.0mi - 36:40 - 7:20 min/mi - 173 avg HR**
Leg 5 was going to be my first real test on the hamstring. I wanted to go hard, but I wanted to make sure my ham was ok. I ended up having a pretty decent HR going, but still didn't feel like I was pushing as hard as I could. I figured that was ok because there were still 2 legs to come. This leg was pretty easy. Flat and the wind was at my back most of the way. I didn't see anyone until about 1 or 2 miles in. And he was pretty far ahead once we got to the straightaway. I kept wanting to pass him and finally with about a mile to go I think he hit a wall because I caught up real quickly all of a sudden and passed. Not too much else to report for this run. Just knid of nice, on a frontage next to hwy 29 in Napa. I passed a wedding in progress, guess if I would have been really excited I might have given them a Cinco de Mayo yell, but alas no...

Crusin in the van before my first leg --- Getting the exchange from Ian

Getting some water from Sean during the run --- I'm all done with leg 5

In Between Running Legs, there's always time for:

The 2nd Annual Bowling Tournament - the lowest scorer gets to wear the shirt from the thrift store! =)

2nd annual Van Bowling Tourney --- Me & Ian --- The brothers bowling against each other

Leg 17 ~1:10a - 4.9mi - 36:31 - 7:27 min/mi - 167 avg HR
Ah yes, the night run. Let's see how the body warms up and if the hammie still holds up. This was an awesome run. Through Mill Valley into Salsaulito, just before the Golden Gate Bridge. I left the van and was out on a bike path by myself under the full moon. I turned off my headlamp and just went by moonlight. Some really pretty relections on the water next to me. As far as runners, I didn't see many, but I could see a few reflective lights in the distance. I ended up passing about 5 or 6 people, I think. I felt pretty good, the weather was awesome and it wasn't too cold.

Ian & me before after very little sleep and before the last set of legs --- Guess who got the lowest score bowling! Nice shirt!

-
Leg 29 ~9:40a - 3.0mi - 26:07 - 8:42 min/mi - 174 avg HR
Alright the steep run. Avg grade of almost 6% for 3 mi. That's pretty steep. Right before this run we had met up with Hannah's team (Hannah ran with us last year) and were talking with them at the transition. Hannah told me there would be a cute girl for me to chase, so my hopes were up. Unfortunately for me, Ian, Mr. Speed Demon, passed their team just before they got there. So I took off upset I wouldn't have a cute girl to chase. I started going and yep, right away the road started going up! I passed a couple of people with varying remarks: 'Ah, you bastad' (jokingly); 'You're my hero'; etc. Also on this run some cyclist came up behind me and were going about the same speed as me for a while, that's a little encouraging. This was a tough run, but at least consistent and I could just keep somewhat of a rythm.

a little peeing prayer before my last leg, I'm still a believer that you can't even tell what I'm doing... --- I'm finished running! --- Lexi is ready to start her last leg!

Me in Santa Cruz, we were all done with our runs!

**An interesting note about the HRs (for me at least) is that when I've been running, I'm usu in the 150s & 160s. I've been trying to figure out how much faith I place in the machine around my arm and how well I know my body & how to incorporate both of those. You can check out some info about training in various 'HR Zones' (1, 2, in link 2 I plugged in 27 for my age and 60 for my resting, I get a max of 193). When I've been using my monitor I've noticed a couple of things to watch for. First, you've got to make sure the strap is 'wet' to begin with to get a reading. I think this aids in the electrical conductivity. Usu at the beginning of a run or in cold weather when the strap isn't wet, I won't register a reading and the display will just have a HR of 240. Well, for my calculated max HR I theoritically come up with 193, but this weekend, I hit a max of 204, which I find really hard to believe for a couple of different reasons: 1) I wasn't sprinting or going up a hill 2) my max calc'd is 193. But if I did hit that, wow! So just a couple of observations regarding the HR monitor. I like having it and playing with the numbers in my head while I'm running, but just like anything else, have faith in yourself.
